The Boys & Girls Clubs of Bloomington is excited to announce that Damon Bailey (Mr. Basketball in Indiana in 1990 and IU Men’s Basketball Team Member from 1991-1994) and Quinn Buckner (IU Men’s Basketball 1976 National Champions Team Member) and Bobby Plump (1954 Milan Men’s Basketball Team Member featured in the film “Hoosiers”) and Ken Kaczmarek (IU Football 1968 Rose Bowl Team Member) have all agreed to be involved with our annual Man Up to Make A Difference event at the NEW Crestmont Club gymnasium on Thursday, December 7, 2017. Also appearing will be Bob Hammel, Brent Slinkard, and Angelo Pizzo.
Indiana is considered by many one of the nations premier sports states, claiming a wide range of incredible amateur and professional sports stories. In celebrating Indiana’s Bicentennial in 2016, a special project was launched to recognize the Greatest Sports Stories in the History of Indiana™. Sports journalists across Indiana have weighed in on this history-making work by voting their favorite top 25 sports stories of all time. Making this project special to Bloomington is Indiana University athletics (5 of the top 25 stories), but also the project being driven by three Bloomington natives, Brent Slinkard, Bob Hammel, and Angelo Pizzo. As well, sport celebrities we love. If you are interested in sports and why we are, and will always be, loyal fans of sports in Indiana, this is an evening not to miss. Not only has this project gained national attention, but it is also IU and Bloomington-centric with stories and people behind the project. Most of all, we connect these great stories to the vitally important role of mentoring youth in our community. It is a feel-good event not to miss!
Dinner buffet opens at 5:30pm. The program will begin promptly at 6:00pm with a live auction to end the night by 8:30pm.
Proceeds will go to support the Boys & Girls Clubs and their male mentoring programs such as “Passport to Manhood.” Check below for more information on the program.
The “Passport to Manhood” program empowers male Club members to enhance and develop their life skills (e.g. decision making and conflict resolution) through engaging and age-appropriate activities. These activities include, but are not limited to; action, sports, the arts and sciences, technology as well as business/entrepreneurship. While paired with a male adult-mentor, the young men engage in programming that helps to develop and engage them in these growth areas. At the conclusion of the mentoring program, the club holds a celebratory event to highlight the accomplishments of these young men.
